Euro brand adds a chocolate boost | Scottish Grocer & Convenience …

FOOD and drink wholesaler Booker has introduced a new Euro Shopper Energy Chocolate bar.
The bar gives profit on return of 30% for each bar at its price-marked rate of 35p ? the same price as Booker?s Euro Shopper energy drink.
The packaging has been developed to look the same as the Euro Shopper Energy Drink, to help shoppers identify it as being part of the same range of energy products. The bar has a flavoured truffle layer that tastes like the drink, says the firm.
Steve Fox, sales director ? retail, said he thought the Energy Chocolate will be as popular as the Energy Drink.

Wall-mounted interactive robot mimics emotions, follows you around, wants to be friends (video)

Wall-mounted interactive robot mimics emotions, follows you around, wants to be friends

Not every robot is here to make our food, clean our floors or perform interstellar maintenance for us. Some automatons are there to simply be admired… or in the case of GIA (Gestural Interactive Automaton), to admire us. GIA’s a robotic sculpture created by Daniel Jay Bertner that is essentially a projector, projection sphere and a webcam attached to a trio of servo-controlled articulating arms. A human face is projected on the sphere, which follows around folks who view it and changes its facial expression according to viewer reactions. Why? In order to “emulate and socially engage” them and facilitate a better understanding between man and machine, of course. The magic happens through open source motion tracking and facial recognition software, but you don’t have to take our word for it — see for yourself in the video after the break.

The Real Reason Why This Year’s iPad Is Bigger and Fatter [Ipad]

This year’s iPad has a very pretty retina display, but it came at a cost: a massive battery that in turn makes for a thicker tablet. Apparently, though, the original plan was to use a newer display technology that would have made the screen thinner and the battery lighter. So what happened? More »

Blurry-cam pic claims to show Sony LT29i Hayabusa

Android Central

We've heard rumors of a new Sony flagship phone on the way, by the codename of "Hayabusa," or LT29i to give it its product number. Last month an alleged image of the device in field testing appeared online, and now we have what may be a slightly clearer — though still blurry — photo of the device. Today's shots show the unmistakable green Xperia logo around the back, with a large camera lens up top and single LED flash. The front of the phone appears to be dominated by a large screen, with no traditional physical buttons, which might corroborate rumors that the Hayabusa will feature on-screen buttons. The device also appears to be fairly thin, though it's impossible to judge this precisely. Also of interest are the curved corners, in stark contrast to the sharp edges of the current crop of Xperia NXT phones.

As for rumored specs, the Hayabusa is said to sport a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset — that's the one with the faster Adreno 320 GPU — with 1GB of RAM, a 4.55-inch 720p screen (with on-screen buttons), and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. A whopping 2200mAh battery and 13MP camera are also rumored. If accurate, these specs would make the Hayabusa a worthy competitor to the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III. And if rumors of a 7-8mm thin chassis are true, the device could also be a worthy successor to last year's Xperia Arc.

A leaked roadmap suggests that the Hayabusa may appear in July around the €500 mark, while recent rumors from UnwiredView? suggest a June announcement could be on the cards.

Of course we're well within unconfirmed rumor territory here, so take these reports with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, we'll admit to being intrigued by the possibility of a new super-high-end device from Sony. And the manufacturer will need to deliver something special in any upcoming flagship if it wants to compete with the latest devices from Samsung and HTC.

?How Could He Possibly Have a Nose Left??

Now he is 57, and his wine life involves winning James Beard awards, writing a column in the Wall Street Journal, collecting 4,000 bottles at his house on Long Island, and calling the urge to collect a sickness. He is America?s leading literary oenographer, a non-snob whose prose benefits from an insouciant skepticism about the conventional wisdom of the Robert Parkers of the world?and a generous expense account. He has a special privileged disdain for the moneymen who jump into the game by playing with $400 bottles: ?If you helicopter to the base of Everest, you miss a lot of the climb.? And it says something about his taste that while he is sober-minded on the matter of drinking itself, he is intemperate, sometimes delightfully so, about the other elements of his hobby?about the pursuit, the possession, the scent of the soil, the myth of the grape, the search for lost time.

Weekend reading: Should personal finance be taught in school?

Weekend reading

Good reads from around the Web.

Lee and Rob, two up-and-coming personal finance bloggers in the UK, are calling for better financial education in schools.

Over on Five Pence Piece, Lee writes:

Right now students leave the family unit to enter further or university education ? or the even more daunting world of work ? with only the vaguest hint of how to manage their money, wages, taxes and bills.

The little that is taught is about the math and not about the personal responsibility, the benefits of being financially astute and the dangers of not. It does not present the knowledge in a fun and ?wow? style; it?s just all about the numbers in the maths lesson.

Rob continues the theme on his own blog:

I was never taught anything about personal finance and to be honest with you I wish someone had at least taught me how to fill in a tax form or taught me my responsibilities with capital gains tax. ?These are all things I had to teach myself when I didn?t see why they weren?t taught at school.

The two would like other personal finance bloggers to share their own views on educating youngsters in the ways of debt, APRs, and interest only mortgages.

I?m happy to highlight their campaign. But I?m not sure they?d want me on their team!

I?m skeptical of school-taught education, to be honest, especially pseudo-practical knowledge that is theoretical until you?re faced with buying your first house, say, or taking out car insurance.

I?ve seen plenty of people?s eyes glaze over as I?ve tried to explain how mortgage repayments work over the years. I don?t think little Johnny gives a monkey?s.

But to not be totally negative (who could argue with the aims?) I would certainly teach kids about compound interest, perhaps by alluding to the still-magical ?1 million figure. That could capture the imagination.

Beyond that, I?d probably try to find something that appealed to the here and now, rather than to their future selves.

Lessons in the second series of?The Wire gripped the young proto-gangsters with the economics of a corner drug dealing spot, but I?d hope things are not so bleak yet in the UK.

Perhaps using the personal finances of a top-flight footballer or a reality TV winner might do the trick?

The bottom line is our education system is teaching kids to start working life mired in debt by going to university without evaluating the return, so I don?t think Rob and Lee should hold their breath.

But I wish them better luck than even the mighty Martin Lewis had with his e-petition to Parliament.

From the money blogs

Deal of the week: I sheepishly admitted to a published novelist the other day that I only read five or six novels in a year. As a teenager I read more in a month! He harrumphed. Perhaps I was a bit insensitive, but am I unusual? A friend swears by audio books, and I see Amazon spin-off audible is offering a free audiobook download to seduce the unconverted.
