We love our pets, we pamper them and we treat them like family ? often to the chagrin of those who live pet-free lives. As a pet owner and an estate planning attorney, I?m often astounded at the number of pet owners who fail to consider the possibility that their pets could outlive them, or that they could reach a point in their lives where they are no longer capable of caring for them. Consequently, they do not make provisions for their pets who bring so much enrichment to their lives.

Responsible pet owners should be aware there is a legal solution that ensures the security of your pet?s future brings you peace-of-mind in knowing that your animal will not become one of the millions who end up in overburdened pet shelters, or even worse, being euthanized. The solution is a pet trust. In basic terms, a pet trust is a legally binding document used by pet owners to ensure that their pets are lovingly and financially cared for when the owners are no longer able to do so.

Two basic considerations in creating pet trusts are financial and human. The steps to creating the actual trust include choosing a trustee and trust protector (people who will be in charge of the funds), funding the trust and selecting remainder beneficiaries (the individuals or charities who would take any remaining funds after the pet?s death).

?Choosing a trustee and trust protector: Some pet owners feel that family members love their pets as much as they do and assume that ?My daughter or son will take the cats for sure.? You need to have the talk with those whom you would like to care for your pets to make sure that the person you select really does want the responsibility and will love and care for your animal according to your wishes. You might be surprised to find that the first person you selected might not actually be the one for the job. At the very least you?ll know whether or not to select someone else. KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? Days after four people died amid a traffic jam of climbers scrambling to conquer Mount Everest, Nepal officials said a similar rush up the world’s tallest peak will begin soon, and there’s little they can do to control it.

About 200 climbers are expected to attempt to scale the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) mountain between Friday and Sunday, Nepali mountaineering official Gyanendra Shrestha said. Some have been at a staging camp for days, waiting for a window of good weather during this worse-than-usual climbing season.

A similar crowd of 208 climbers headed to the summit last week, and four died Saturday in one of the deadliest days ever on the mountain.

Ha Wenyi of China, Eberhard Schaaf of Germany, Nepal-born Canadian Shriya Shah and South Korean Song Won-bin died on their descents from the summit, apparently from exhaustion and altitude sickness.

Shrestha also said a Nepalese Sherpa guide who had been reported missing reached the base camp safely on Monday. The guide was separated from his group and did not have communications equipment, Shrestha said Tuesday.

The deaths have raised concerns about overcrowding above the highest camp on the mountain. The area is nicknamed the “death zone” because of the steep icy slope, treacherous conditions and low oxygen level.

Describing a “traffic jam” of climbers Saturday, Shrestha said climbers were heading to the summit at 2:30 p.m., even though 11 a.m. is the latest start time recommended. That meant climbers were staying too long at high altitudes and exhausting their oxygen supplies because they didn’t anticipate having to wait.

Now, with a similarly large number of climbers expected to head up the same trail under similar conditions, Nepalese authorities acknowledged safety concerns but said they can’t turn any of them away.

“The climbers have received the permits to climb within specific dates. We cannot say who gets to get to the summit on which dates because of the unpredictable weather. When weather clears up they all want to benefit,” said Nepal’s Tourism Ministry spokesman, Bal Krishna Ghimire.

Apa, a Nepalese Sherpa guide who has scaled Everest a record 21 times, said climbers are eager to take advantage of good conditions because “the window of good weather is so short,” and they are afraid they may not get another chance to climb to the summit.

He said the traffic jam of climbers going up and down the same icy trail makes it hazardous, especially with climbers already exhausted from having climbed all night from the last camp, at 8,000 meters (26,246 feet).

“And having to wait for extra hours and the delays only makes the situation worse,” said Apa, who uses only one name.

Ghimire said it is up to the climbers and their teams to assess the conditions and safety.

“We have officials at the base camp, but beyond that it is mostly up to the climbers,” Ghimire said.

He said that eventually, the government plans to set up a seasonal office at the base camp equipped with doctors, weather experts and security personnel. Ghimire said they also have plans to give each climber a tracking device.

More than 3,000 people have climbed Everest since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to do so in 1953. Some 225 climbers have died attempting it.

The deadliest day was May 10, 1996, when eight people were killed. The main reason was said to be that climbers who started their ascent late in the day were caught in a snowstorm in the afternoon and lost their way.

The climbing season normally runs from late March to the first week in June, but this year the season’s first clear conditions were on Friday and Saturday. A windstorm hit the higher altitudes by Saturday afternoon.

Alain Resnais back in Cannes competition at 89

CANNES, France (AP) ? The Cannes Film Festival received a dose of theater Monday in the form of French director Alain Resnais‘ new film.

“You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” is a love letter to the acting profession that shows a troupe of thespians performing a play based on the Greek myth of lovers Orpheus and Eurydice.

There are several plays-within-a-play in the drama, which features a who’s who of French dramatic talent, including Lambert Wilson, Michel Piccoli and Mathieu Amalric.

The 89-year-old Resnais told reporters that he was trying to show the similarities between theater and film, often portrayed as completely different art forms.

He said Monday that “people often say that the theater is a noble art whereas films are not.”

But, he said, “in both cases, you need actors” ? and both plays and films need to keep an audience enthralled.

“When a scene is being played in the theater you can’t raise your hand in the room and say ‘I didn’t really understand, can you start the scene again?’” Resnais said. “You have to listen and try to understand.

“And at the cinema, up until now I haven’t seen anyone go to the technical staff and say, ‘Could I please see the second sequence again because I fell asleep in the middle of the film? These are parallels between the theater and the cinema. These are things they have in common.”

“You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” is one of 22 films competing for prizes at the French Riviera film festival, which runs until Sunday.

Resnais became a pioneering figure in French cinema half a century ago with adventurous films such as “Hiroshima Mon Amour” and “Last Year at Marienbad.”

He won Cannes’ second prize in 1980 for “My American Uncle,” and the festival gave him a lifetime achievement prize in 2009.

The director turns 90 in June but is not ready to retire. He’s planning a new film, a comedy based on an Alan Ayckbourn farce.

“You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” is, in part, a meditation on aging and death. Several generations of actors play musician Orpheus and Eurydice, the bride he tries to rescue from the underworld.

But Resnais said he did not look back when making films.

He said his philosophy was: “I try not to repeat myself, ever.”

Resnais also said that if he thought people were going to see the film as his last testament, “I wouldn’t have had the courage or energy to make it.”

Lawyers for fugitive Iraqi VP quit case in protest

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Lawyers for Iraq‘s fugitive Sunni vice president charged with running death squads quit the case on Sunday in protest after judges rejected their request for evidence for his defense.

The development underscored Tariq al-Hashemi‘s claim that he will not get a fair trial on the charges he denies and says are politically motivated.

The case threatens to paralyze Iraq’s government by fueling simmering Sunni and Kurdish resentments against the Shiite prime minister, who critics claim is monopolizing power.

“It became clear that there is a hidden political decision to incriminate me,” al-Hashemi said in a statement after the court adjourned Sunday afternoon. “The judge became my adversary.”

He said his “basic rights and guarantees of the defendants” have been violated.

At the outset of the trial’s second day, al-Hashemi’s defense team demanded to be allowed to pull his phone records and appointment calendars to help refute earlier testimony that the vice president and his son-in-law had ordered bodyguards to kill security and government officials. Their aim was to prove that al-Hashemi, one of Iraq’s highest-ranking Sunni officials in the Shiite-led government, had either been out of the country or not in communication with the bodyguards at the time he allegedly ordered the assassinations.

But a three-judge panel rejected the request, and ruled that last week’s testimony by three bodyguards who swore they were given money to kill al-Hashemi’s enemies was strong enough to negate any further evidence.

The judges also said al-Hashemi could have arranged for the attacks while he was outside the country.

With that, al-Hashemi lawyer Muayad Obeid al-Ezzi and the rest of the defense team walked out.

“We do not want to be part of this unfair trial,” al-Ezzi said over the telephone after leaving the courtroom. He said he would return if the evidence is allowed and the judges agree to transfer the case to a special tribunal appointed by parliament.

Last week, three of al-Hashemi’s former bodyguards testified that they were ordered and paid to kill security officials and plant roadside bombs. They said the orders either came from al-Hashemi’s son-in-law, who worked as his office manager, or from the vice president himself.

Three more bodyguards, three relatives of victims and a tribal sheik were among the witnesses called Sunday to testify against al-Hashemi.

Dressed in traditional robes, tribal leader Sheik Khuder Ibrahim Hassan said he was paid up to 105 million Iraqi dinars (about $90,000) to carry out bombings against Iraqi police and army forces between 2009 and 2011 in Tarmiyah, 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Baghdad.

He said each attack was filmed and copies were sent to al-Hashemi, and that he was paid once directly by the vice president. Six other payments came from al-Hashemi’s aides, Hassan said.

“He used to say that Sunnis were marginalized, faced arrests and suffered from unemployment and these operations would help them,” said Hassan in nearly an hour of testimony.

Hassan and all the bodyguards who have testified in the trial so far are facing murder charges for killings that allegedly have been linked to al-Hashemi, who could face the death penalty if convicted. Judges on Sunday appointed two new lawyers for al-Hashemi and his son-in-law, and the next hearing is set for May 31.

The case has strained relations between Iraq and several of its mainly Sunni neighbors, including the Gulf states and Turkey where al-Hashemi took refuge. On Sunday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan maintained he has no intention of extraditing al-Hashemi to Iraq.

“Until the day that the Iraqi vice president, who is our friend and brother, desires to return, he will be hosted in our country,” Erdogan told reporters.

‘Glee’ Nabs Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson For Guest Spots

Stylish leading ladies Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson have just been announced as the latest A-listers to appear on “Glee.”

While details about their roles and story lines on the Fox hit have yet to be announced, according to the network, Parker will appear in at least one episode, while Hudson has been confirmed for a six-episode arc. The news comes hot on the heels that the show has been moved to Thursday nights, to air on the same night as results shows for either “The X Factor” or “American Idol.”

The show’s season finale is set to air May 22. It includes appearances from Lindsay Lohan and Perez Hilton. The fourth season of the show, set to premiere this fall, will follow the graduating class of McKinley High as they pursue their dreams outside of New Directions.

Many fans have been wondering how the show will press on outside of the high school setting, and with the network expected to hold its upfront presentation in New York on Monday (May 14), those questions should get some answers.

Fox is expected to make a number of announcements at the event. The biggest news expected to come out of the presentation is the announcement that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato have been confirmed to sit at the judges’ table alongside L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell on “X Factor” this fall.

The new Thursday-night block of “Glee” and “X Factor”/ “American Idol” makes sense, given that all of the programs are music-centric. Tuesday nights on the network will now be focused on comedy, with “New Girl” and “Raising Hope” airing that night alongside new shows “Ben and Kate” and “The Mindy Project,” starring Mindy Kaling of “The Office.”
